as you know, that his services are exclusively ours and were he to give a Power/Attorney to Schluter for Canton, it would be in the same conditions, that is, that Schluter would have to cut himself adrift from Reuter Brockelmann and give up his time to
us only.
Mr.Cheetham has evidently consulted with the solicitors, Messrs Johnson Stokes & Master, and has obviously asked us about the suggested Power/Attorney for Schluter after thoroughly going into the matter with them who are the leading solicitors in Hongkong, and act for the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. It would seem therefore that neither Cheetham nor they are aware
of any objection to such a delegation of power to Schluter.

We shall be very much obliged therefore if you will be BO good as to ascertain the exact position in Hongkong, so that we may advise Mr.Cheetham to take the step suggested, if after further consultation with Messrs Johnson Stokes & Master they see no objection to it, and after having once more made it clear that an essential condition must be the complete severance of Mr.Schluter from any German ties or influences what so ever.
As we ventured to explain to you this morning, it is highly important for us to secure if possible the continued co- operation of Mr.Schluter who alone in that part of China has a full knowledge and experience of that particular business, to which Mr.Cheetham comes from Shanghai quite new and comparatively uninformed. We have in this matter to consider not only our own interests, but those of our Bankers (the Hongkong & Shanghai B.C.)
